Accelerators
What Introduction Outcomes Justify an Accelerator’s Programme Budget?
A programme director needs more than a list of founder meetings to justify another year of spending. The funding case should connect the support benefit delivered with the proposition the accelerator takes to founders, funders or partners.
Measure founder progress to understand whether the benefit helped, then assess the operator's costs and relevant commercial outcomes separately. A founder's funding round is not a receipt in the accelerator's operating account.
Give each stakeholder the evidence for their decision
Programme staff need relevance and progress information. Finance needs the full delivery cost. A founder-paid model may need actual paid-place receipts and demand evidence; a funder-supported model needs the agreed outcomes and reporting basis. Report partner income only where an actual commercial arrangement exists. Do not attach a made-up financial value to every mentor conversation to make the purchase appear profitable.
Set the intended outcome at the start
For customer discovery, useful progress may be learning why a target buyer will not purchase. For a sales introduction, it may be a qualified follow-up or proposal. For an investor introduction, it may be a second conversation or entry into diligence. An expert conversation may resolve a decision without producing a transaction.
Choose one primary next step for each request. Do not force every use case into a deal-conversion percentage.
Separate the stages
Record relevant opportunities, mutual acceptance, conversations held and next steps reported. Later, record contracts or funding where founders choose to share that information and your reporting purpose permits it.
Include response rates and dates. A pending investor process should remain pending rather than being counted as a failed introduction. A signed contract should be distinguished from a proposed pilot or verbal expression of interest.
GALI's historical benchmark tool separates venture outcomes such as revenue, employment and finance. Its data were collected in 2013–2019; use it as methodological context rather than a current conversion benchmark.
Report contribution with care
Ask founders what role the introduction played and what other support mattered. Venture progress may also reflect product changes, existing relationships, market conditions and the founder's own execution.
GALI's synthesis evaluates acceleration in a wider setting. It cannot isolate the effect of your introduction workflow or software purchase.
Connect the report to the operator's decision
Finance and programme leadership need the full cost, including staff coordination and follow-up. If the intended benefit is reduced administration, measure the actual workflow before and after a change rather than assuming a saving.
If the programme is funder-supported, agree which founder outcomes and evidence the funder considers meaningful. If investment performance matters, acknowledge the longer time horizon. Neither case is improved by adding the entire value of a founder's contract or funding round to the accelerator's own revenue.
End the report with a clear recommendation: which introduction types deserve more capacity, which requests need better preparation and which gaps require network development.
